Brief: ‘Design a product that enhances the touchpoints when visiting Park Hill flats’
I have created an information device that lights up the walkways, but also shares images and sound recordings about the history of Park Hill.
Park Hill flats are an iconic part of Sheffield landscape. The radical and ground-breaking housing development fell into disrepair during the 1980s and were considered for demolition until rescued by the grade 2* listing from English Heritage. However, from the initial construction of the building until present time a strong sense of community has always been felt by the residents. I wanted to show this through my work with the use of a unidirectional speaker and photographic projector sharing past images and audio to current residents.
The unidirectional speaker allows for the sound beams to be focused so that residents inside their flats will not be disturbed by the audio. Model making was undertaken to test the size and shape of the product. Anti-vandal fixings have been used to prevent damage to the product.
