Alpkit ‘Little Explorers’ is a backpack to encourage children to learn about their surroundings. It gives children the responsibility and independence to carry their own belongings and makes going outdoors fun and exciting.
The backpack includes outlines of different UK birds for children to colour in once spotted on a walk. The material allows the backpack to be washed in the washing machine to remove the colour, enabling the child to colour the birds again. This promotes creative expression and unique artworks can be created. A detachable activity pack includes various fun tasks to be completed on and after a walk.
Children aged between 2 and 8 from a primary school completed the activity sheets and colouring activity. The children had a large range of ability, which confirmed that the activities are suitable for a varying age range.
A website was created to promote the backpack, due to this only being a screenshot example it was created using Indesign.
The backpack comes with a social media group for parents to connect, share walks and show their children’s creations. New downloadable activity packs are readily available for parents to print at home.
Testing of different shapes and sizes of the backpack corresponded with children’s ergonomics and anthropometrics. The backpack was created to suit the average 5-year-old child.
