‘Brief: How can the concept of time be explored in a creative way to produce an imaginative and appropriate 3D outcome?
For this project we were asked to explore the concept of ‘time’ and respond to it in a creative and imaginative way. I have produced a high quality 3-dimensional outcome that responds directly to my research and development. I decided to create a visual product rather than functional as this allowed me to interpret my research to design a clock.
Inspiration has been taken from the Winter Gardens in Sheffield as the materials used weather overtime and therefore change colour. I wanted to show this in my work as it represents time. To achieve this, I used steel as it slowly oxidises and turns into a copper colour. The mechanism inside the wooden dome rotates the acrylic rod and steel. Holes have been drilled out of the steel to represent time; each section equals an hour of the day. As the product rotates a light is projected from the cut-out in the base of the dome. This allows for light to shine through the holes which therefore represents the hour of the day.
